Printer-friendly versionA few years ago, Horst built a wonderful fenced garden with raised beds. All materials including the soil were pushed up in the wheelbarrow. It was “his” garden and he spent many hours there, establishing herbs and tending to the plants. Other projects have been calling him, and it seems the garden is now “mine”. Last year, the slugs devoured much of the young vegetables I had planted, and I am not letting that happen again. Every morning and evening I visit the garden, and at night I go on slug patrol with a flashlight (my headlamp comes in handy). When I find one, I chuck it into the woods, hoping that it will take a long time crawling back into the garden.

So far I have been lucky. I have only found a few slugs and the beans, radishes, sunflowers and cucumbers have sprouted and I can watch the seedlings grow. There is so much to learn about soil improvement, ph and acidity and pests and I have no shortage of books. I probably also need a good portion of luck and sheer perseverance and hard work to achieve success in the garden.
