Round Bowen Races
Last weekend was the fifth “Round Bowen” kayak race and racer Derek Crook from Nanaimo was happy that we had a bed for him and Rob to rest up for the June 5th race. Susan and I interrupted tearing down remnants of the old fence, and we headed down to Pebbly Beach to see the boats leave from Snug Cove. There were a lot of boats (according to the Undercurrent 108 boats had entered) and at one point they stretched all the way across Deep Bay. I took photos, but the light was not so favourable and the boats look tiny. We have yet to find out whether Derek and Rob were the paddlers who won in the “Double” category. We think their chances were good. Derek paddled solo around Vancouver Island last year and his next venture is the Yukon River Quest. Both he and Rob are serious paddlers, not recreational Sunday paddlers like me.
Tomorrow, June 12th, the Round Bowen sail race is happening. It has a longer history than the paddling race and is always well attended.
