Storm, Sunshine and Chocolate Art

We have been very lucky at our house with the recent storms that hit the BC coast. All we had to endure were two days of lost power. The wood stove provided heat and a way to cook our meals and heat the water. Others in the region were left without power for several days, with hydro poles snapped in half and trees crashing on roofs. Today another storm was forecast and we prepared to stay home and wait out the storm. To our surprise the wind died, the dark clouds lifted, revealing blue sky and the sun. We went out to experience the light after all these dark and rainy days, taking in the last day of the show Meltdown Artwork in Chocolate at the Gallery at Artisan Square. The pieces did not melt in the three weeks they were on display. Would they still be edible? Congratulations to Joanne and Carlos of Cocoa West and the artists who produced the pieces. - If you have missed seeing the show, you can visit Cocoa West and at least get a culinary delight.

Skipping to October

September was still summer, savouring the last of the great sunny weather we had, kayaking, picking the last blackberries and visitors enjoying Bowen when the kids have returned to school.

All of a sudden, it is October and summer is over. Felix, our cat who has shown us a cold shoulder for the last while, has decided to return and spends more time in his favourite chair, cleaning himself and purring. Winter cannot be far away!

Last weekend, the Bowen Heritage Preservation Association organized "Apple Fest 2006". It was a great little event, displaying all sorts of apples, grown right here on Bowen, apple bobbing, musical chairs (blocks of wood), a cider press, caramel apples and barbequed apple/chicken sausages. The two GVRD tents housed all that, including the judges of the apple pie contest, where my German "Apfelkuchen" came in second (not THAT hard, with all of five entries). Despite the rain, it was a great harvest event, enjoyed by young and old.

August is Blackberry Season

August is for blackberries and crickets, not-yet-ripe tomatoes, soon to be harvested plums and apples. It's a month for all I have missed in July. For enjoying more warm days at the beach. Still hot, still summer, but heading into September, the end of this glorious season.

Hot Summer - Cool Shade

Hot Summer Day at Pebbly Beach

It's hot - and we like it that way. The trees give us shade and the ocean cools us off. This is the best place to be at these temperatures.

First Swim

I finally made it to my first swim, thanks to Maggie and Tobias who I accompanied to the beach to see them off on their kayak outing. Despite the long weekend, the beach was deserted and only the boats usually anchored in Deep Bay were there. The water seemed cold and it took me a while to get fully immersed. Once my body acclimatized, the water was lovely. Definitely, swimming was the highlight of my weekend.

Wild roses and honeysuckle are already in bloom at the beach.
