Anna’s Hummingbird - the one that hung around in the winter is still here with frequent visits to the feeder. Hoping for baby hummingbirds. Mostly hummingbirds hover while feeding. This one needed a rest with wings actually folded down.

Today was the perfect day to hike into the mountains, through the clouds, to find the sun! What a gorgeous feeling, walking through the bright sunshine, seeing the glistening snow on trees all around, the carpet of clouds below us and in the distance the snowy peaks of the mountains in the Howe Sound basin. Must do this again soon.

For once, I managed to clean the windows (in case the sun shines and I want to see it) and put up decorations before the First Advent Sunday. The sun was blinding, but not for long. On a walk through the rainy forest I found these bright yellow Tremelle Mesenterica mushrooms, also known as Witches Butter.

I have finally conceded and acknowledged that summer is over. It says “Fall” on my calendar and in the air. No more swimming or siestas at the beach, the geraniums are inside and the patio chairs have been stacked away. The wood stove is spreading its warmth and I’m spending more time indoors. Deer are getting ever closer, waiting for apple peels and cores, which I’ll share with them as long as my stash of apples lasts. I don’t mind the does and young ones, but when confronted by bucks, I stay at a safe distance.

The causeway at the Lagoon is a popular place to watch chum salmon returning. It’s a great place to watch this phenomenon, as fish are making their way over boulders and fast streaming water to return to their origins to spawn.

I’m on my annual end of season vacation, this time on the west coast of Vancouver Island. After watching the sunset and now listening to the surf in the dark I’m pondering how I could postpone my obligations at home and extend my vacation here. Next time I’ll book at least three nights.

Just in time before the end of the summer, we are back to welcome guests to Bowen Island. Blackberries are ripe, the ocean still beckons to go for a swim. It’s sunny and warm and days are still long. Come and walk the trails in Crippen Park or hike up Mount Gardner or just soak up the late summer sun at the beach.

A doe and her fawn, that still has its white spots, are hanging around the plum tree, hoping for squirrels or birds to chuck down some fruit. Today, I carelessly left the gate open while in the fenced garden. Between watering and seeding winter crops I sensed a motion and figured it’s our cat or a bird, but when I actually looked, I saw the little fawn with all four feet firmly planted in one of the raised beds, nibbling on the tomato leaves. Of course I had no camera with me and I was mainly concerned to get the fawn out of the fenced garden without injury. All I had to do was walk towards it and tell it to get out. It quickly jumped down and through the open gate. I quickly shut the gate and the fawn stood outside, peering in and nibbling foliage protruding through the fence. Obviously, its encounter with me did not scar it or scare it away from the area. How wild are our deer really? The dry summer is hard on them and they just go where the food is. The red-legged frog is also still hanging around the pond although by now it should be moving to a near-by stream, except that stream has no water. As much as I love the sun, I am hoping that we’ll get some decent rain soon.

Fawn under our plum tree August 17, 2009. Obviously that one also still was quite small and had white spots.
